The bigger shift may come from networks that can adapt rather than simply operate.
DARPA’s Communications Under Extreme RF Spectrum Conditions program is exploring systems that can recognize interference and jamming and adapt communications accordingly.
Meanwhile, DARPA’s work on resilient tactical communications has demonstrated how secure information sharing can operate across different military and commercial networks, reducing dependence on fixed infrastructure.
For U.S. forces, that flexibility could translate into faster decisions, better situational awareness, and greater operational mobility.

Potentially—but technology alone won’t guarantee it.
The advantage comes when resilient networks, trained personnel, interoperable systems, cybersecurity, and intelligent command-and-control work together. Recent Army exercises have also highlighted the importance of redundancy after simulated communications disruptions affected satellite connectivity.
Ultimately, military communications technology could give U.S. forces a meaningful battlefield edge by helping them maintain connectivity, share information, and make decisions when an adversary is actively trying to prevent all three.
